There is an epidemic in the coaching world that no one is talking about.

Coaching has been around since the early 90's. Over 50,000 coaches have been trained and certified, and this number doesn't include the thousands of people who are coaching without training, estimated to be another 50,000.

As exciting as this field is, many coaches are struggling to make a living. In fact, approximately 57% of coaches coach part-time, which means that they have another income source to support themselves. Only one in ten coaches earn an annual six-figure income. And, the median annual income for a coach is under $37,500.

Over the last 7 years I've worked with thousands of coaches through my online communities and training events. And what I discovered is that there are two major reasons why so many coaches are not reaching their financial goals.

1. The first reason is that they don't treat coaching as a business. 

They treat it as a professional practice, just like a therapist or a doctor or a laywer would. This approach usually takes them years to build their practice, requires a lot of patience and persistence, and most importantly burns you out.

The reason it burns you out is because to generate revenue in your coaching practice you always have to be there, either coaching existing clients, trying to enroll new clients, or networking with people who can refer clients to you.

Either way, nothing happens without you doing something every single day. Overtime it becomes a burden. And if you talk to some coaches who've been coaching for years, they will share with you that they're no longer excited about their practice.

Treating coaching as a business also means having unlimited income potential. There will always be a "ceiling" in a coaching practice - maximumum number of clients you can take, maximum prices you can charge. When you think of your coaching practice as a business, it's easy to replicate yourself and your coaching process in many different formats, create dozens of income sources, and help many more people.

Most importantly, you get to build a real company with many assets and income sources. Your business then has value beyond you.

2. The second reason many coaches do not succeed, is because they're simply overwhelmed. 

Advice comes from dozens of different sources, including books, seminars, CDs, "mastermind" buddies, coach training instructors, and your own coach. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what to do first, because every strategy seems like a perfectly viable way to build your business.  It's easy to become frustrated, impatient, and overwhelmed. In fact, there are coaches who have been in the learning mode for years after completing their training.

I also noticed that many brand new coaches make these 5 mistakes over and over again. These mistakes may cost you months or even years of frustration! (Many "senior" coaches continue to make the same mistakes, by the way!) Take a look:

Mistake #1:
Using Coach Training as a Business Strategy

Having years of coach training will make you a better coach, give you the tools and confidence to work with clients, but it will not help you build your business. Many coaches spend years focusing on coach training only to realize that they're right back where they started - on a client-chasing "treadmill."  I recently talked to a coach who completed her MCC in coaching and, 10 years later still makes under $30,000 a year. This makes no sense, and yet hundreds of coaches take the same road.

Mistake #2:
Wating for a Niche To Find You

A niche is a group of people who share the same problem. It's absolutely essential to work inside a niche group. It allows you be more focused with your solutions and much more effective in your marketing.  Many coaches choose to wait in the hopes of stumbling upon a niche. In my experience, this rarely happens. In fact, I see coaches with 5-10 years of experience who are still "generalists." They continue to believe that a niche will find them some day, as they continue to struggle.

Mistake #3:
Focusing on Enrolling 1-on-1 Clients

One of the biggest reasons people start their own business is to have a flexible schedule and plenty of freedom in their lives. Unfortunately, when you fill your practice with 1-on-1 clients, this becomes impossible.

I've spoken to many coaches who do have a "full practice", and they shared with me that it feels like they've got a job. They don't have any time left to do anything else in their business, and when a client leaves they quickly start looking for a new one to keep their income at the same level.

Coaching doesn't just happen one-on-one.This is probably the biggest shift and breakthrough my clients experience. In fact, some of the most successful people who make the most amount of money in coaching don't do one one coaching at all! And if they do, it's a very small part of their business.

Mistake #4:
Acting Like a "Solopreneur"

One of the biggest mistakes I remember personally making is doing everything myself in my business for the first few years. What I later learned is that handling every aspect of the business yourself is like "painting yourself into a corner" - very "messy" to get out of!

It may be difficult to understand, especially if you're not generating any income right now, but let me tell you this...Bringing an assistant to take care of your administrative tasks - even for just five hours a month! - will make a tremendous difference in your life.

Remember, "solopreneurs" are people who own a job. You want to own a business. A business that can run by itself and take care of you and your family for many years to come.

Mistakes #5:
Surrounding Yourself With the Wrong People

I see many coaches who are not successful themselves start advising other coaches on how to build a business. So, you might actually end up listening to those who are still struggling.

What you can do instead is surround yourself with coaches and business owners who are highly successful in other fields. "Outsiders" from other industries are coming into coaching right now and making millions of dollars. This may frustrate hundreds of coaches who have been in this business for many years, but that's exactly the type of people you need to surround yourself with!
